VIRTUAL REALITY IN EDUCATION

I think Virtual Reality has a place in education, as long as it is controlled and supervised. As long as the games have some sort of educational content e.g. problem solving skills etc. I think that virtual reality games can be valuable to students. I do think however, that these sorts of games are best suited to older primary school children – they have the maturity needed but are still young enough to enjoy and benefit from such games.

SCRATCH: MY GAME – SELF-EVALUATION

What parts of the project do you like? (Strengths)
I liked being creative. I really wanted to give my game a storyline and in doing so I was able to use my imagination. I enjoyed making everything ‘work’ and my end result was even better than I thought it would be which is always really rewarding. I challenged myself quite a bit and overall I am more than satisfied with the end result. I am quite an expert at using the broadcast tool now. I would consider it one of my strengths. I was also able to work out how to use tools I never had before.

Another strength of mine is my good time management skill. I worked really hard, used y time wisely and met all the deadlines.

What parts would you fix or change? (Weaknesses)
If I was to change something I’d probably add more levels or more ‘adventures’ in the series. Other stories with the same characters would be a nice addition to my game. I think I am definitely capable of doing this if I want to. One of my weaknesses is saving projects, I had to start again. Luckily, for me, I was ahead of the class at that point so really it just put me on par with everyone else rather than putting me behind. A personal weakness of mine would probably be being  a prefectionist. I like things near-perfect but I guess that’s just how I am.

What other features would you add to your program?
I would probably add more sound. I was going to add more sound but none of the sounds I liked were available on Scratch or could be made on Garage Band. If I was doing a big project on Scratch perhaps I could attempt to make the sounds somehow myself, experiment a little.

Comment on the following about your project:

1. How user- friendly is your project? Does it do what it is supposed to do?
Yes, to my surprise my program does exactly what I set out for it to do, and more. This is why I am so happy with it.

My game is probably designed for someone of upper-primary school age. I wouldn’t say it is designed for little children however people of all ages could probably enjoy it. You don’t necessarily need to know the storyline to play the maze, so pretty much everyone can appreciate it or get some enjoyment out of it.

2. What features does your project have? Do all the parts function as they should? Have you included all the techniques discussed on rubric? What new techniques have you included?

I have used the broadcast tool, sound, motion commands, ‘when touching,’ question and use of answer command, dialogue, point in direction, when clicked, background transitions, wait … seconds, the hide and show commands and many more. I also customized a background using the drawing tool. Everything functions how it should. One of the new techniques I used was the ‘ask and answer’ command. I worked out how to do this myself. I’m not much of a planner so some stuff I added as I went along although I did have a pretty specific idea of what I wanted in my head. As far as I am aware I have used all the techniques on the rubric.

3. How engaging is your project? Is it interactive, original, sophisticated, pretty, funny, or interesting? How did you feel as you interacted with the project?

I personally, think my project is good. I tried to make it a little bit different how in the end he gets caught. I wanted to make it a little unpredictable. I wasn’t sure how to use the ‘ask and answer’ tool but I worked it out myself. I used this tool to make my game feel more realistic and be more interactive. I attempted to use humour also although how successful I was depends on the opinion of the player. I felt engaged when playing my game although I tested it easily about one hundred times and I was getting really sick of it as I had to continuously go through the prompts when testing – it definitely took patience.

Hopefully everything works for you Ms Lupone, it did for me but if you have any problems perhaps I can have a look at it and attempt to fix it for you.
